This is the first of many this season we will need a Botfly to be removed. So botflies is a common fly in North America.

The most basic prevention is to keep your cat from hunting rodents. When this is hard or impossible and if you live in an area with numerous rodents, rabbits, or other small mammals, you should definitely carefully inspect your cat regularly for any signs of botflies. The earlier a Botfly is removed, the less likely the chance of permanent or serious pain to your domestic cat.
